A model that is becoming increasingly strategic for the energy transition is that of green hydrogen production plants integrated with photovoltaic energy and BESS storage systems. They are designed to supply end users such as transport companies, logistics operators and hard-to-abate industries, namely sectors that are difficult to electrify and challenging to decarbonize.
The energy transition is no longer driven solely by renewable energy generation, but by the ability to combine different technologies within a smart energy ecosystem.
The aim is to generate green hydrogen, meaning hydrogen produced through water electrolysis powered by electricity from renewable sources.
In Europe, the concept of green hydrogen is also governed by the framework RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) under the RED II Directive and EU Regulation 2023/1184, which set the criteria for hydrogen to qualify as genuinely renewable and support decarbonization targets.
In a setup of this kind, the energy generated by photovoltaic plants powers the electrolyzer used for hydrogen production, while the storage system optimizes energy management, reduces peaks and improves the stability and flexibility of the entire plant.
